Einführung
Accredited by: CIOB RICS
Quantity Surveyors are an essential link between the designer and contractor on construction projects, providing key advice on costs and contracts.
Quantity Surveyors require a wide range of skills and knowledge covering the financial, legal, managerial, economic and communicative aspects of a project from inception to completion.
The programme is accredited by the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and the Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB). These accreditations provide graduates access to RICS and CIOB membership via the graduate routes. All second-year full-time students have the opportunity to spend one week in Europe as part of their studies.
A 24-week industrial placement is incorporated into year 3 of the programme. The industry placement allows students to understand the application of their taught skills and benefit from work-based learning. Full-time students in Year 3 also take part in an "Interact" design project, working as a team with students from the Glasgow School of Art, the University of Glasgow and the University of the West of Scotland to develop a network of contacts and solve a specific design problem.
Your career
Graduates from the programme have been recruited by leading organizations in the construction and property sectors such as BAM Group, Laing O'Rourke, Lend Lease, Balfour Beatty, Turner and Townsend and Doig+Smith.
International student start dates
For new international students, orientation events start on 14 September 2018. This extra time is specifically designed to assist new international students in settling into the UK and GCU prior to the start of general student induction and teaching.
There will be a whole host of fun and informative activities taking place during this period, including campus and city tours, as well as welcome events where you can meet other international students.
Work placement
All second-year full-time students have the opportunity to spend one week in Europe as part of their studies. A 24-week industrial placement is incorporated into year three of the programme. It allows students to understand the application of their taught skills and benefit from work-based learning.
Professional accreditation
The programme both full-time and part-time is fully accredited by the RICS Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and CICES the Chartered Institute of Civil Engineering Surveyors. Representatives of RICS visit students during the programme in order to set exercises and assess their performance. On successful completion of their Honours degree, graduates may commence working towards their professional qualification to obtain Chartered Membership of the Institution (MRICS).
Study abroad
Students have the opportunity for International Exchange. This could be for one trimester or a whole year study at another institution, often at one of our European partners, where courses are offered in English. Currently, students taking this option do so at Year 3 and gain credits towards their degree.
HM Forces
In partnership with HM Forces, GCU has identified this programme is being particularly suited to military and ex-military men and women. Visit the HM Forces Careers Zone for more information on the services we provide.
Assessment methods
Expect a variety of assessment methods including coursework activities and formal examinations. You take part in the unique Interact Project where you work with students of other disciplines from three other universities. As part of your overall assessment, you are asked to prepare a cost plan and cost report based on the architectural drawings given while keeping within budget. This project is sponsored by the Sweett Group, with the best individual Quantity Surveying student and team winning an award.
Teaching methods
You will experience a variety of teaching methods based in workshops, laboratories and tutorials as well as industrial and site visits. Industry professionals will deliver guest lectures, while you will be able to access web-based materials through the Management Learning Environment. You will be expected to work on projects individually as well as in a group and will have the chance to go on field trips and study tours, including the annual European trip, which is open to all Level 2 students.
